A quick painting of my handsome husband. He sat very well, but the room was very warm so he was trying to fight off sleep while this was being painted.

I took this photo a little over a year ago at the Saskatoon Berry Farm just south of Calgary. I had been planning on painting it for a while but was side tract by my schooling and recent wedding. I love this image, I think the statue placed next to the fountain seemed almost magical as it watched over the pleasant little bird bath. I particularly focused on playing up the colours in her robes and in the pool of water inside the fountain as they add to their character. Enjoy.
Over the course of the last year I have had the opportunity to paint and draw Donna Lee many times, I would have to say this is the most accurate likeness of her I have done yet, both in its formal execution and in the spirit of the image. Done in two sittings for a total of 5 hours model time, and an hour of work to finish up.
This little canvas has gone through a long and arduous process to find its inner painting. It is more textured with more layers of paint than anything I have ever done. It's journey continues as I have yet to choose any specific orientation, But I believe it has finally found a sense of balance. The title actually comes from the metallic paint resting on top of of large nugget like forms which made me think of gold prospector, it also seemed to fit nicely with a painting that has been through multiple radical transformations.
The piece is a bit more subdued than my usual landscapes. Its inspired by the lakes of Alberta. The lakes that are out in the middle of nowhere, as if they were made only for you. A hike on a cool cloudy morning where the trees bend with the wind, and the water laps against the shore. Perfect solitude.
Being in British Columbia is beautiful, but the winters are very cloudy and living in the valley means no more horizon. It makes me miss the open sky of the prairies. Spirit in the Sky is another ode to Alberta, its vast wondrous plains and large rolling clouds.
Ah ha! This is where I do my painting when I am away at school, also a small time lapse of me working on the foreground of a wintery painting. The only sad part is this canvas is very warped, therefore I will be the only one who ever owns this painting. Still enjoy the video.
