Being in British Columbia is beautiful, but the winters are very cloudy and living in the valley means no more horizon. It makes me miss the open sky of the prairies. Spirit in the Sky is another ode to Alberta, its vast wondrous plains and large rolling clouds.

This piece is another side trip to Canadian art. This image is from a family trip to Banff approximately a year ago.  Looking out over a vast frozen lake towards the mountains is a humbling experience. The unforgiving wilderness makes one wonder how anything can survive. Especially in the dead quiet of winter. No creatures stirring, as if the whole area has been cast under an enchantment to sleep away the year. And that's what I tried to capture.

This picture is my idea of the perfect escape. an oasis where you can feel that there a new world to discover, (just around the river bend comes to mind). I know there are places on this earth that are truly awe inspiring even if I don't get to see them in person that often, where people look around and realize that they couldn't have dreamed up anything more magnificent.

Morning Mist - Acrylic on Canvas

Morning Mist - 24x24 Acrylic on Canvas
Hand Painted Original

This picture for me is a highly abstracted image of a foggy morning, in an English countryside. Its a very serene and peaceful sort of place I like to imagine. For me misty fields have always seemed magical and otherworldly, the grey skies like a veil between one world and the next.

A Moment of Winter - Acrylic on Canvas

A Moment of Winter - 24x36 Acrylic on Canvas
Handpainted Original

I love winter running (when its not minus 25 with wind chill). Many people find wither to be colourless and boring, However I greatly disagree, our winters are one of Canada's greatest gifts. To have such pronounced seasons each offering up its unique beauty. This is my ode to winter. I remember when I was seven, there were only a few hills to go sledding on within walking distance. One of these areas was in a little forest, and when you were waling through it, with the light glimmering off the trees and the snow. When the only sound was your feet crunching, and if you stood still, It was absolutely silent.  That to me, was just magical.
